Affiliate Marketing Training For Beginners [The Complete Guide]
Affiliate marketing is simple.
In fact, it’s one of the most simple ways to make money online for starters. You don’t need a product or an insane huge amount of traffic (to profit from advertising).
A little bit about me.
My name is Anh, I’ve learned how to make money online via affiliate marketing.
My results are humble. A lot of my experienced friends who followed the same process even ended up becoming a full-time online marketer…
… or even make up to 5 figures in a year.
But simple doesn’t mean easy.
In this post, I’d like to share everything I know about affiliate marketing, as well as introduce the best affiliate marketing trainings for beginners. I’ll try to be as realistic and down to earth as possible. Starting from
- How to succeed with affiliate marketing
- The best affiliate marketing training for beginners
- Affiliate marketing resources
With no further ado, let’s dive in.
Affiliate marketing tips for beginners
In one sentence, affiliate marketing allows you to earn money by selling other company’s products.
Chances are you’ve heard about huge affiliate marketers’ successe like Pat Flynn who makes up to 100k per month online. When ValueClick reported their affiliate marketing revenue to be over $84,573k in 2011, you know the potential is huge.
And the best approach to affiliate marketing is to create a WordPress blog and give honest reviews on products from Amazon or any other affiliate networks (with your tracking links, of course). After that, work your way to rank on Google’s top results.
If you’ve done a good job at targeting buying keywords, you’ll profit.
Because folks who bother to search for things like “LG 32LB550A LED TV review” already have their credit card on the table, ready to buy a new TV for their appartement.
This is called the Customer Purchase Lifecycle.
Of course, you’ll need a bunch of skills to successfully nail the whole process.
So… how the heck do you succeed with affiliate marketing?
How to succeed with affiliate marketing
Success doesn’t happen overnight. Keep your eye on the prize and don’t look back.
There are thousands of things you can learn in order to succeed with affiliate marketing, from technical know-hows to SEO to content marketing.
However not all tips are weighted the same, below are two ultimate tips that can make or break your online business.
Ultimate tip number 1:
Let’s play a little game.
Answer this question and I’ll tell you if you can succeed with affiliate marketing:
“How long are you willing to commit?”
- If your answer is “three (or four, or five) months, if I can’t make money then, this whole thing doesn’t work.” Then this thing won’t work, for you that is.
- If your answer is “one year or more. You know what? I want to become financially free and I’m willing to crash and burn for as long as it takes.” Then congratulations. You’ve just passed this test!
That said, I understand why you’d think a couple of months is enough. You’ve probably ran into folks like these
Well, no one have a weird trick up their sleeve to make $3,500 per month, they just want to make money off of your naivety.
That’s right, you simply don’t make money online fast.
It’s gonna hard, and you will want to give up. However, making passive income online is possible. Anyone can do it, no matter where you come from (as long as you have a laptop and internet connection). Me and thousands of other online marketers are living proofs of that.
When you think about how a lot of us are shopping online, it makes total sense how making money online is no joke. Where there is a market, there is profit to be made.
While you fumble to learn the craft, you will fail several times, and that’s okay.
Accept it, learn from it.
And tell yourself:
Ultimate tip number 2:
Launch Your Dream
Bare Naked Marketing
They guided me along and I finally got a breakthrough in my life as well as on my online business. I made my first dollar online on 24 April 2014.
Over and over we hear how mentors can change our lives.
My story is no different than Eli and Jack’s.
Once up a time, I thought I was smarter than everyone else and that I can make money online all one my own. Long story short, I didn’t make a penny.
It wasn’t until I start investing into my business and learn from the best, that things really take off. In order to learn anything, you’ll need throughout training and mentors, even better if there is a supportive community keep you accountable.
You’ll succeed much faster and you won’t have to weep as much along the way.
Okay, what are the best affiliate marketing training for beginners?
I’ll cover all of that below.
The best approach to affiliate marketing is to create a WordPress blog that gives honest reviews on certain types of products from Amazon or any other affiliate networks with your tracking links.
Ultimate tip number 1: Commit to work on your online business for a year and beyond.
Ultimate tip number 2: Learn from the best.
The best affiliate marketing training for beginners
The only affiliate marketing training program that I recommend is Wealthy Affiliate, an all-in-one training and community for aspiring affiliate marketers founded by Kyle Loudoun (on the right) and Carson Lim (on the left), two amazing guys that you can contact anytime as a member.
This is the platform that helped me make my first dollars online. They have detailed courses designed for absolute beginners to start their own affiliate marketing business.
With over 600k members and growing, Wealthy Affiliate is more than a simple learning space. It’s also one of the most active online marketing community on the internet.
The most difficult aspect of building a business online is getting help when you need it. We are a community that truly cares and will be there for you all day, every day.
Is Wealthy Affiliate for you?
Before you jump into something like affiliate marketing and Wealthy Affiliate, it’s wise to ask yourself if you are ready to invest a decent amount of time, energy and money into it before ever seeing results.
Instead, if you are looking for a quick solution, I would recommend something much more simple than affiliate marketing to begin with, like offering your skills on freelance sites like PeoplePerHour or Fiverr.
That said, if you can relate to any of the following sentences:
- I want to create a passive income stream.
- I want to turn my hobby into an additional income,
- I want to monetize my blog,
- I love a good challenge,
… then there is a huge chance that you’ll love Wealthy Affiliate, too.
Price and membership
Wealthy Affiliate has two pricing plans: one free Starter and one Premium membership at $49 per month (click here to get a 50% discount!)
The Starter membership is ideal for new users to experience the Wealthy Affiliate platform at zero dollar. For the first 7 days you are free to use all Premium features, then you’re limited to
- Only access the Level 1 course,
- No access to Live Chat,
- Create only up to 2 websites,
- No access to SiteComments and SiteFeedback.
Aside from being limited to 2 websites, you also can’t host your own domain name (like your-site.com), and has to settle for a your-site.siterubix.com domain name instead. Note that while you can use a SiteRubix extension for as long as you want, later upgrading to your-site.com will hurt your traffic and search engine rankings.
Other than the fact that you can get one single price for everything, the best part about the Premium membership is that it opens up the whole social side of the platform. A few key features include
- Freely chat and blog,
- Personal support from Kyle and Carson,
- Create and fully control up to 50 websites,
- Access to SiteComments.
Some folks may claim that you can make money with the Starter membership. But in my opinion, it’s very unlikely because the level 1 course only covers the basic of the basic. And you won’t have access to the community to ask questions.
Worst of all, you can’t use your own domain name when creating a website with SiteRubix. In our line of work, trust is vital and not having your own domain name is a clear lack of seriousness to your visitors.
If you’re not ready to invest in Wealthy Affiliate, you’re better off hosting your site for $3.95/ month on a solid web host like BlueHost, then devour
Especially Luqman’s (one favourite posts), you’ll learn much more about online marketing then with Wealthy Affiliate’s free membership.
How long does it take to make money online?
Seriously. Who cares how long it takes? As long as you can keep going, and get through the burnouts, you’ll reach some level of success.
If you ask me how long it takes to profit from affiliate marketing with or without the help of Wealthy Affiliate, my answer will always be…
I don’t know.
That’s right. I don’t know how long it’ll take you to learn Japanese, or Portuguese and I don’t know how long it’ll take you to get a hang of online marketing.
It depends on your initial knowledge and experience, your determination, the amount of time you show up to do the work.
For some, it takes a month to see results…
Others takes 4 months…
Or even up to 6 months.
I’m not here to give you false hope when 53% of affiliate marketers earn less than $20,000 per year.
Wealthy Affiliate is just a tool.
It’s you who’s gonna do the work, who’s going to put in the extra hours to make it work.
So the question is not how long it’s gonna take, but how?
6 steps to make money with Wealthy Affiliate
Here’s the thing… not all of us succeed at Wealthy Affiliate.
Over the year, I’ve seen dozens of posts like this one.
Here, Yinc88 made up to $43 AUD from her first sale, that’s great isn’t it?
But when I checked her website, she hasn’t updated since 2015.
There are a lot more folks whose website even ended up disappearing from the surface of the internet.
It’s really a shame.
I hope that you are different.
I’ll give you a hand, here are 6 steps to succeed with Wealthy Affiliate compiled from my own personal experience and research.
Step 1. Sign up for Wealthy Affiliate
Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality.
If you truly, madly, deeply want to making money online, sign up for an account at Wealthy Affiliate right now. To start — go to Wealthy Affiliate (this link opens in a new window so you can reference this guide as you work).
On the right corner, enter your full name, email address and password.
Make sure that you use a working email address because this is where your login information will be sent. Then click the green Create Your Free Account! button.
You will automatically be directed into the Wealthy Affiliate platform.
Note that Wealthy Affiliate doesn’t offer the free Starter memberships in certain countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines and Vietnam. So if you’re in these countries like me, you’ll need to buy a Premium membership first-hand.
Step 2. Say hi
Aside from being a great course with super timely support, Wealthy Affiliate is also an active community of over 600 thousands members.
This little feed nicely summarizes our liveliness.
There is no denying the importance of a community.
It motivates us, keeps us accountable and shares our journey.
Did you know that folks that have a complete profile are 50% more likely to receive support from other members? Take one minutes to fill out your description and profile picture (i.e. here’s mine!)
Then come over to the Live Chat section (on the right corner) and say hi or if you are more shy, write a blog post instead.
Step 3. “Get Started Here”
Wealthy Affiliate has an impressive list of lessons on affiliate marketing.
There are five courses from beginner to advanced, designed for you to go from one to the other until you reach level 5.
Level 1: Getting Started
Level 2: Building your Own Traffic Producing Website
Level 3: Making Money!
Level 4: Mastering Social Engagement
Level 5: Achieving Maximum Success through Content Creation
The easiest way to start using Wealthy Affiliate is to hit the “Get Started Here” button on the top left corner.
Each of these courses contain 10 throughout lessons, all accompanied with video guides.
The best part is that you have a checklist at the end of each lessons, which makes the course a lot more actionable and fun.
One more thing, below the checklist is a comment section that you can use in case you have any questions. Despite the fact that there are over 100k comments, you’ll actually receive a quick reply since all questions are featured on Wealthy Affiliates’ homepage.
This is just one of the many ways to seek help on Wealthy Affiliate. If your question is not course related, just submit a stand-alone query or simply chat in the Live Chat section.
In my experience, it’s easiest to seek help on Wealthy Affiliate is through the quick search tab on top of the page.
You can search the whole site to make sure if someone has already answered your question, if not fill in the form on the bottom of the search results and hit “Ask your question”.
Step 4. Find a mentor (… or mentors)
I used to think mentors need to be some wise, old sage who know everything about anything, the kind who sticks with you through thick and thin, as cheesy as that may sound.
That is until I read The Art of Work by Jeff Goins.
Your mentor may not be the teacher you dreamed of, and that’s the point. This is your education of what is, not what you think should be.
As long as you are willing to learn, anyone can be your mentor.
They can be that guy who pointed out a broken link on your site, or that successful marketer who answered one of your newbie questions, or that blogger who wrote something that makes you think.
So be deliberate.
Read a lot and ask a lot.
Wealthy Affiliate’s founders are some of the most approachable folks I’ve had the chance to work with. I’ve lost count of the times I reached out to Kyle (and Carson, too, he’s more of a technical guy in my eyes) for just about just anything from chatting about business, to asking for some advices.
On top of that there are also many successful, full-time online marketers at Wealthy Affiliate who are more than open to give back to the community.
Step 5. Leverage all the features
SiteComments is the only platform in the world where you can get real comments, from real people who are interested in your type of website.
Wealthy Affiliate boasts a handful of must-use useful tools that will surely make your life easier. Here are my most recommended:
- WordPress web hosting — while you can easily rent a reliable web host for less than $4 a month. It helps to have your site and community in one place. And of course, this adds more value to Wealthy Affiliate’s offer.
- SiteComments — Wealthy Affiliate helps me gather over 1,552 thoughtful comments to my blog by the time of this post.
What I love about SiteComments is that it’s a simple give-and-take system, nothing automated or shady.
- Keyword Research — a straightforward keyword research tool that helps you save time and money on setting up the Google Keyword Planner.
- SiteFeedback — a tool to give and take feedbacks for your blog. It’s good to use it at first, then you’d also want to develop your own style.
Step 6. Show up all day, everyday
I was a complete beginner yet I managed to make money after a week.
You want to know my secret?
I spent over 100 hours in front of the computer in that first week. This was certainly overkill and I wouldn’t recommend that to you. However, I am not smarter than you, I am not better than you, I am not special in any way. All I did was put in a lot of time and a lot of efforts into it and I saw the results.
Signing up for Wealthy Affiliate and setting up your blog is just stage 1.
Want to go to stage 2 and make money online?
Show up and put in the work.
Oh and remember not all of us started out on the same level. Folks like Alex who made money in his first week had already spent a lot of money crashing and burning with online marketing scams.
Don’t compare yourself to other folks and give up because “you take longer”, you don’t know the silent hours they’ve put in to get where they are.
This is about you and your journey.
Be a winner.
And run the marathon.
Affiliate marketing resources
Here are the best tools and resources I’ve used to build up my affiliate marketing business that you may want to check out as you create your own. I’ve also included some comments and personal notes alongside each products for easier reference.
Most recommended resources:
- Wealthy Affiliate – A must-have to create a lucrative affiliate marketing business. An online course and community to learn about online marketing. This is the course that helped me make money online, also where I host Bloggingthing.
- NameCheap – All of my domains are purchased through them. These domains are as low as $4.88 per year.
- BlueHost – I’ve had a good experience with BlueHost, very affordable hosting. A nifty solid host for starters.
- Jaaxy – Keyword is at the foundation of ranking on search engines. Jaaxy is a great low competitive keyword research tool that helped me rank on search engines.
- MozBar – A Firefox and Chrome extension that shows you sharing and SEO ranking metrics of every site and pages you visit. I can’t live without this one.
- Google Analytics – A classic. Google’s free website tracking and analytics tool that allows you to track all the stats and activity going on in your website.
- MailChimp – Minimal, characteristic and easy to use, this is my email marketing tool of choice.
- PeoplePerHour – A freelancer marketplace to hire web designers, programmers, graphic designers etc. for a great price.
- Fiverr – Another freelancer marketplace… starting at only $5, I’ve found a lot of gems here!
Affiliate marketing is about recommending the best products to your audience and put yourself in spaces where they can easily find you.
Well, that’s easier said than done.
My wild guess is that it will take way longer than you’d expect to earn your first sale. When I first started, I thought I’ll make… 10k in 3 months. Obviously that didn’t happen.
It took me over 6 months to make my first sale.
Looking back, I’m super proud that I didn’t give up halfway. I guess I was desperate enough with living a bland, typical life.
I don’t hate my job. But it doesn’t excite me, I crave to work on something… I’m passionate about. And that’s when I stumbled upon Wealthy Affiliate. But I am from Vietnam I didn’t get the discount or free membership.
In the end, I took the plunge anyways.
Fast forward one year later, I finally made money online. And was featured on huge sites such as The Huffington Post, The Daily Egg and ProBlogger. Even better, I had the chance to interact with industry leaders like Joe Pulizzi, Michael Stelzner and Neil Patel.
… none of this would have happened without Wealthy Affiliate.
I highly recommend Wealthy Affiliate to anyone who wants to make a difference in their life. I hope it can help you ass much as it did me and then some.
